Public positions should be noted in court pick

Sen. Chuck Grassley, in his guest column on Sunday, states that the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee are hoping to delay the selection of a new U.S. Supreme Court justice until after the Nov. 6 elections by seeking to obtain more records of the nominee, Brett Kavanaugh. This is, of course, upsetting to the Republicans. They want to name a replacement before the election.

Grassley states that he is 'focusing on the most thorough and transparent confirmation process of any Supreme Court nominee to date.”

Why did he not conduct such a transparent confirmation process on President Barack Obama's nominee, Merrick Garland? Obama's nomination was completely ignored. That position was vacant from February 2016 to April 2017. Nothing was done.

Now Grassley is 'inviting” the Democrats to set aside 'election-year posturing” and join him in 'his” version of selecting a new nominee to the Supreme Court. Why should they do that?

I am sure the Republicans and Democrats could have found a judge who would have a record that would be compatible to both parties if they had dropped 'election year” politics. Maybe the well-known positions of the public should be considered.
