We stand, figuratively, on the shoulders of those who have gone before us. Because of a personal attack to my educational colleague in a recent Gazette guest column, I enthusiastically reaffirm to our community that Washington High School Principal Ralph Plagman is an outstanding educator of impeccable character. His 40-plus-year commitment to public service is widely recognized as a positive role model for others to emulate. On behalf of a grateful educational community, I commend him for his meritorious service.
Being over the age of 60, I am often tempted to glorify the past. The fact remains, however, that we bear the responsibility to educate children who must live and work in the world of tomorrow. Our mission requires that we be forward thinking, promote a positive public discourse, and champion educational opportunities for today's students.
The Cedar Rapids Community School District is blessed with an engaged and supportive community, many dedicated leaders like Dr. Plagman, visionary leadership by the Board of Education, and wonderful hard-working students, parents, faculty and staff. Working together, we will ensure that the future holds tremendous promise for our children.
Dr. Dave Benson
Superintendent
