President can’t enforce his will on the people
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Feb. 26, 2010 11:00 pm
In response to Garrison Keillor's Feb. 13 commentary, meant to extol the virtues of hard work to congressional Democrats, I say: What about no don't you understand? The reason Democrats should stop working on Obama Care is simple. The American people have spoken; they don't want it. Kings, sovereigns of their realms, can enforce their will on an unwilling public, but, thankfully, that is not how a representative republic works. Our congressmen are accountable to us, not a king.
President Barack Obama's slightly revised Senate version of health care legislation includes sneakily funding abortions with our tax dollars. Americans, angry with the elitist-we-know-best attitude of Democrats in Congress, will get a lot angrier if Democrats change the rules of the Senate to pass health care legislation that we abhor.
