Pray for spiritual rain to cleanse ourselves

We are in a serious drought and many are saying we need to pray for rain. I agree. But our need for rain is nothing like that experienced many years ago when Israel went for three years without rain. That drought ended after the prophet Elijah prayed for rain. But before that, the people had to repent of following the false god of Baal and return to honoring the true God.
Could it be that we, likewise, before praying for literal rain, should pray for a “spiritual” rain of repentance for our worship of false gods (such as materialism) and “seek first the kingdom of God” and receive the promise that then all these thing (like rain) will be added?
