Postville raid observed

Five years ago on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the Postville, Iowa, immigration raid, the Dubuque Telegraph Herald Editorial Board wrote:

When the 10th anniversary of the Postville Raid rolls around, let us hope that it will be said, 'It took longer than it should have, but we now have an immigration policy that is clear, fair, good for our country and good for all people.”

Much to my dismay this cannot be said.

On Friday, May 11, we will formally observe the 10th anniversary of this infamous and never to be forgotten raid. Planners for the event are describing it as a summons, as a call to action. Yes, once again, we see it as a call for 'an immigration policy that is fair, good for our country and good for all people!”

It is a defining moment, a moment from which there is no turning back. It is a call to become who we are called to be at the deepest core of our being. It is a call to become a nation of people committed to justice, equality, and respect for the dignity and rights of all people. It is a call to return to the values that served as the foundation of our country. It is a summons.
