Postal system needs new revenue ideas

I read an interesting proposal in Popular Science to use U.S. postal trucks for other uses while they are on their delivery routes. It seems that these routes are an ideal way to collect data for research. Carbon monoxide levels, weather data and road conditions are only a few of the many things these vehicles could collect data on.
Firms would pay a fee for the use, alleviating some of the financial stress on the postal system. There is some precedent. Greyhound allowed sensors to be installed on their buses to gather data for a project several years ago.
Perhaps some “outside of the box” thinking could help bail the postal system from its woes.
