Politicians are working for lawbreakers
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Feb. 4, 2012 11:10 pm
With the support of Gov. Terry “I don't care what local governments decide” Branstad, Republicans are supporting HF 2048, which would ban traffic cameras on city and Iowa roadways.
Branstad says their use is so “unfair.” Apparently the time of these Republicans is much more important than that of law-abiding citizens who treat automobiles as potentially lethal weapons and do not run red lights or exceed posted speed limits out of respect for the safety of others. Crusading Republicans don't seem very interested in facts, so statistics showing traffic cams reduce accidents, save lives and create more civility are likely to go unheard.
While on their “fairness” crusade, why stop at traffic cams? Why not ban cameras at bank ATMs? Their existence is so “unfair” to thieves who want to remain anonymous when mugging honest Iowans. And why not ban cameras at convenience stores? They are so “unfair” to those who want to rob and steal.
It is sad to see petty Republican politicians working on behalf of lawbreakers.
