Political system needs changed
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Aug. 5, 2013 12:36 pm
Political campaigns are lasting years and costing billions of dollars nowadays. Because of those things, average citizens are exempt from the process, leaving it exclusively for the super rich with access to unlimited special interest money.
That exclusion of the average citizen voter alienates average citizens from the process of our representative republic government envisioned by our Forefathers. It places the entire responsibility in the hands of the 1 percent most elite and wealthy and that is not good for average Americans or our country.
Our current political system is run by millionaires, special interest groups and the media. You can't get common sense government of the people, for the people and by the people without their involvement and participation.
Our survival depends on changing our political system:
l Our political campaigns must be shortened to 3-6 months in length.
l The media must be restricted in their involvement, cost and influence of elections. They must not benefit from the billions in advertising while expecting objectivity in their coverage.
l We must establish a non-profit Peoples Political Online Network that cuts advertising costs drastically while maintaining objectivity and fairness for all. Ads must deal exclusively with the candidate's own stance on issues and exclude all attacks or accusations of competing candidates.
l. All special interest PAC money must be excluded from trying to influence the outcome of our elections.
Are we willing to fight for our country or content to settle for what we get?
