To the editor:
Regarding the Sept. 10 letter 'Guns have made society less safe”:
If more guns are the answer, why are there more gun-related deaths now than there was 30, 40 or 50 years ago? Didn't the sheriff's deputy who was recently shot in Houston have a gun? How about all the other police officers shot recently? Yes, the deputy had a gun, but he was assassinated. All the other officer who have died recently were shot by someone who shot them from a distance, in the dark or while doing their job.
The letter mentioned the amount of deaths now compared to the 30s, 40s and 50s. Well, that could be because of all the gangs, drive by shootings. Look at the difference in the upbringing now and during the years you mentioned. You had parents who disciplined their children and taught them to respect others. That's not happening now. The minority in this country who worship the outdated Second Amendment are holding our legislators and the majority of this country hostage with their scare tactics. So I suppose the Constitution, Declaration of Independence are outdated. You can blame everything else except the real problem. Individuals who have 'no respect” for other people's life or property. Have no respect for the law and those who signed up to protect and serve. Remember who these dead officers are, and what they put on the line for others. Remember that people make society less safe and that the Second Amendment speaks for the majority not the minority.
