Passing laws vs. solving problems
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Jan. 30, 2011 8:30 am
The last I read, there were some 20,000 gun laws on the books of our nation's political jurisdictions, yet bloodshed continues. The drug war rumbles on, yet the police column is preoccupied with substance-related offenses. Sacrificing liberty on the altar of security is a failure.
We pass more laws, hire more cops, build more jails and spend more money, but we do not solve problems. We could try sacrificing security on the altar of liberty or we could change, take off our dunce caps, put on our thinking caps and strive for both liberty and security.
