Out-of-state interests trying to oust judges

I just received a robocall urging me to vote against retention of three Iowa Supreme Court Justices. Why would I do that? Iowa has been a quiet beacon protecting minority rights over the decades. In our democracy, majority rules but rights of minorities are protected.
While some protections are legislated, some come from an independent judiciary, set apart from political campaigning and big-money interests. Mississippi-based American Family Association and New Jersey-based National Organization for Marriage are pouring money into the effort to unseat competent, experienced Iowa Supreme Court judges who have risen through the ranks.
My hope is that we Iowans do our homework, look past the robocalls and TV ads funded by these outside organizations and vote not only to retain our judges but also to protect ourselves from politicized judicial campaigns funded by outside interests.
