Open gyms for a healthier Iowa

As we prepare to indulge with Iowa's delicacies - also known as fried food on a stick - at the Iowa State Fair, it comes to mind that a significant number of Iowans are fighting one of the greatest health epidemics of our time - obesity.
The numbers are staggering. In Iowa, two out of every three people - both adults and children - have been identified as either overweight or obese.
The good news: there are many initiatives ready to combat this crisis, and most of them include an exercise element. Exercising during this time of year is easy. The weather allows us to be outside. We can run, walk, bike and even practice yoga. But what happens when the weather grows colder and sidewalks become icy?
For many Iowa communities, the school gym is the only space to exercise. Unfortunately, due to liability concerns, many gyms and other school recreational facilities are not open for public use after school hours. Shared use of school recreational facilities is one small change that could have immediate impact on the health of Iowans.
Studies show that when people have access to recreational opportunities, they are more prone to get active. Let's break down barriers for getting more exercise on a daily basis across our state.
Public schools should have the option to open their gyms to their communities. Let's hope this becomes a reality soon for the health of all Iowans.
