Older generation needs its security back
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Sep. 9, 2011 2:24 pm
President Barack Obama has been talking about the corporations hoarding money and not hiring people. But the money held by people older than 55 is many times greater that this hoarded capital. The politicians have scared this group by continuously talking about failure of Social Security and Medicare. Low interest rates and continuing stock market failures have crashed their retirement funds.
Surveys show older people are not retiring because of their deteriorating monetary situation, high food costs and high energy costs. The economy is getting a double punch because of the lack of confidence of the older citizens in their ability to support themselves after working and lack of job openings created by their continuing to work.
The big question: Has the government so destroyed the confidence in the older generation that they will stay in this protection mode for a long time?
We must give them back their security as soon as possible. Many of the younger population can move back home, but the old are home and must make do with what they have now.
