Offering ‘the bird’ as our new state bird
John Klaus

A recent letter to The Gazette suggest the State Bird of Iowa be changed from the goldfinch to the extinct dodo ('Does Iowa need a new state bird?” March 10). I would instead suggest a non-extinct bird, even if a metaphorical one: I refer to the proverbial unidigital salute, which seems to be in common use in this fair state, and particularly by outraged citizens, a class that seems more and more prevalent.
