Obstructionists don’t present alternatives
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Apr. 30, 2011 10:55 am
Recently, we listened on the radio to two people giving their reasons for not supporting the local sales-tax extension and later received a postcard giving the same message.
We heard and read the same arguments and lousy timing we've experienced from the residents against everything progressive in Cedar Rapids for too many years: Don't trust officials, ignore the sound reasoning by the best minds in town and, of course, offer no viable alternatives.
The against-progress people seem to come out of hibernation just before decisions need to be made. I have watched these obstructionists come to the microphone just after well thought out ideas had been presented by panelists; their entire message consisted of “now just a minute.”
Twenty years will go by in a blink. The one-penny tax has not been a burden on families.
