Obama has right course for Afghanistan
The Gazette Opinion Staff
May. 10, 2012 1:31 pm
The May 2 article “Obama in Afghanistan, sees ‘light of a new day'?” was excellent.
President Barack Obama and Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai signed a 10-year compact for U.S. troop withdrawal from our longest war. The compact calls for a withdrawal of most of the U.S. troops by the end of 2014. But for 10 years, the United States will keep trainers for Afghan army men and Afghan police and civilian adviser teams in Afghanistan.
Let's elect Obama for another four-year term. I urge the residents of Iowa to not vote for Mitt Romney. He plans to increase the already bloated defense budget beyond the $700 billion we spend on defense each year. This will increase our government debt. Romney would probably keep our troops in Afghanistan beyond 2014 if he was elected. This would encourage the Afghanistan government not to do its share of defense.
