Not all men have gotten the message on women workers

Just when I thought men had learned to accept that women are able to do a job in a so-called man's world, I read about the City of West Union in a recent Gazette ('Female officer says West Union ousted her after sexual harassment complaints,” April 12).

After a female officer filed a complaint of harassment with the Iowa Civil Rights Commission, she was put on administrative leave. She was told by a superior that she must resign or he would 'recommend her dismissal to council,” so she resigned. He stated that she was just not as engaged with work like she used to be. It seems she was given six write-ups for performance issues, alleged to have occurred after she complained about discrimination, harassment, and retaliation.

Since she was a K-9 officer she asked to keep Xena, her dog, because after a dog is with an officer for a certain amount time, they have trouble bonding with another officer, possibly shutting down and having to retire. I ask the West Union City Council to let Xena leave with her partner, which would be best for both of them.

It's very frustrating that there are still men who cannot treat a woman with the dignity she deserves on the job like her male partners receive.
