Nostalgia, not facts, behind train support

As legislators debate taxpayer funding of Amtrak rail expansion (Omaha-Iowa City-Chicago), they need reminders of the feasibility and sustainability of the proposed project. I believe these are ideas of a minority and influenced by memories of the “good old days” of trains.
To replicate the quality, ambience and services of those bygone years would be cost prohibitive. Further, it is very likely that people will continue to drive their automobiles for short to moderate distances, regardless of the price of fuel or parking.
Studies also point out track right of way is always ceded to freight trains. Any track upgrades for Amtrak would ultimately provide greatest benefit to private freight companies. Average speed would be 50 to 60 mph, hardly the promised “high speed” service. It's also unlikely Amtrak would run on schedule.
If the state has extra money for pet transportation projects, consider subsidizing charter bus service from Iowa City to Chicago - more efficient, reliable and affordable.
