No-wake Lake Macbride soon could be reality
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Nov. 26, 2011 11:25 am
If the Iowa Legislature has an open mind to the compelling testimony presented at a special Senate interim subcommittee gathering on Nov. 3: After 25 years of social injustice, Lake Macbride's 10-horsepower limitation during the summer months may finally be set aside in favor of “no wake for all boats all year long,” which is preferred by the Department of Natural Resources and the standard for all other artificial Iowa lakes of more than 100 acres.
Macbride's “special” summertime boating regulation has been a hot-button issue for local fishermen for many years as it is the only publicly funded and maintained Iowa lake of its size that has this type of restricted usage, which in effect creates a private lake for a select few during the summer months.
The long-awaited change has already passed the Iowa House and is being considered for passage in the Senate. Local fishermen are encouraged to contact their respective state senators and request passage.
