No GOP president has lowered debt

I would like to bring this to the attention of anyone who has not followed political parties as closely as I have. No Republican administration has ever lowered the national debt in my lifetime. I am 75.
There may have been a carry-over from the Johnson and/or Clinton administration. After the Reagan presidency, the interest on the national debt was equal to what the total debt was when he took office.
Why would anybody believe a Romney administration would lower the national debt? Republicans don't know how.
