No benefits to Daylight saving time

To the editor:
On Sunday, Daylight saving time will be inflicted upon us again.
When we lose our hour of sleep in spring, the rate of heart attacks increases, as does the number of fatal accidents. There is an increase in tardiness and drowsiness at work and school as people struggle to adjust and the claimed energy savings don't actually occur - some studies indicate that the switch-over actually increases energy consumption.
Nearly all countries in the world have attempted DST at one point and most have abandoned it when the supposed benefits never materialized. The United States should also abandon this useless, harmful and antiquated practice.
