New ordinance reduces need for medical care

Statistics have been published showing a reduction in the number of assaults since the 21-only ordinance has passed. I agree. As an emergency medicine physician in Iowa City who frequently works evenings/overnights on weekends, I have not cared for anyone involved in an alcohol-related altercation since the change to 21-only.
Previously, it was not uncommon to sew up individuals involved in alcohol-related fights on weekends. Undoubtedly, the connection between alcohol and violence is strong. I am troubled by the continued concept of “yes for safety” driven forward by individuals, some of them self-serving.
I also believe the 21-only ordinance has discouraged people under 21 from outside our community coming into town to drink, then drive or stir up trouble and consequently send people to the emergency department. The ped mall and streets are safer with the new ordinance. If college students and the community want to be safe, they need to vote “no” on Nov. 2 to alcohol-related violence.
