New agenda at shelter may not put animals first
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Sep. 15, 2009 12:32 am
I have been a proud volunteer at the Cedar Valley Humane Society for 15 years. I have seen a professional, compassionate staff create programs and creature comforts for animals in unfortunate circumstances.
Staff members who were instrumental in these positive changes were fired. Two board members quit because of (Humane Society board President) Bernie Lettington's agenda for the shelter. Why?
The public needs to ask questions, too. Why is Lettington being so secretive? Why does he cancel meetings when volunteers want to talk with him about his direction for the shelter? I've heard rumors including more euthanasia, higher adoption fees and a remodeling plan that could put some animals at a higher risk of disease. I can't believe his agenda has anything to do with putting animal welfare first.
Your money is paying for this shelter. You deserve to know what's going on.
