Never leave a friend behind when in need

To the editor:
It was very sad to hear about the city clerk who stole more than $32,000 from our small town over a 5-year period ('No prison time for city clerk who stole,” July 26).
We all know her, as you can imagine, from a town of 50. She is a neighbor and a friend, to all, whether you live across the street or across town.
I know the clerk and her husband personally. They are very nice people and helpful in your time of need. We are hurt by her actions, befuddled. But, as friends and neighbors we forgive.
As an Army veteran our motto is: Never leave a fallen soldier behind. In civilian life we never leave a friend behind in the time of need. My wife and I will be there for her because she is our friend. We also know she did wrong.
The judge was right in his decision of five years of probation. Prison was not going to change or help anything. I thank the judge for his insight. I thank him for not sending her to prison for 15 years.
After all is said and done, she still is all of ours neighbor.
