Naig’s optimism does not reflect reality

What do you want to believe? Sometimes, a feeling of wanting to believe is so strong, it shapes into what one actually believes is real.
Secretary of Iowa Agriculture Mike Naig has continued his perpetual words of optimism. Naig says farmers are revving up conservation practices that in turn reduce farm fertilizer runoff into Iowa's streams and lakes. This is what Iowa citizens want to hear and want to believe. Unfortunately, that has formed a false reality for many Iowans.
Yes, conservation practices are increasing. Yes, application of cover crops is a significant part of that runoff control strategy. Yet, as conservation efforts have increased, the amounts of fertilizer and pesticides have increased even further. Thus, Iowa's streams and lakes continue to receive dreadful amounts of runoff pollution. The battle to reduce water pollution isn't being won.
Visit an Iowa lake that posts a sign "Swimming is not recommended." If you're in a canoe paddling downstream, see the clumps of dark green/brown foamy floating sludge. Iowan's need to do a reality check on Naig's optimistic view.
