Military honors available for veterans

Recently a member of American Legion Post 298 passed away. The family asked about military honors and was told by the funeral director that military honors were not appropriate because he had been cremated. This is not true.
One possible reason the director told the family what he did is that he didn't research what assets are available. There are numerous veterans service organizations, such as American Legion Posts, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Marine Corps League and AMVETS, that will render honors at a veteran's funeral. The National Guard will work with properly trained veterans service organizations at an Army or Army Air Corps veteran's funeral or send a two-man team for folding and presentation. Other armed services will send representatives on a more limited basis.
If you have difficulty, contact a veterans service organization.
