Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all

Regarding the letter from Mary Stoddard (“Don't let Christmas message die,” Dec. 4):

Yes, Mary Stoddard, you still can say “Merry Christmas!” Really, you can. No one is preventing you from doing so. I'll say it back, even - gladly and earnestly, with tidings of great joy.

But, in case you weren't aware, Christmas isn't the only holiday that comes around this time of year, nor are many of the trappings of Christmas even Christian in origin. Indeed, much/most of the symbols associated with Christmas come from various other faiths. The tree isn't of Christian origin. Even the celebrating at this particular time of the year isn't of Christian origin. Most of the celebrations revolve - and evolved - around the Winter Solstice, and the solstice isn't unique to any particular culture or faith.

So, you see, Mary, “happy holidays” isn't meant to insult you or your faith traditions, but merely folks' way to acknowledge all the various holidays this time of year, to be inclusive of all in our community. Remember, Obliquity of the Ecliptic is the real reason for the season.
