Mental health recovery possible with support

In light of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'd like to share my story of recovery and hope.
I belong to a group called NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill). One of our mottos has been “Recovery - we can get there from here.”
I've suffered from a condition called bipolar schizoaffective, commonly called manic depression with schizophrenia. The onset of my condition was so severe that I spent three months straight in a psych unit. For a period of more 17 years, I went to the hospital 2-3 times a year. My condition eventually became stable enough to earn a degree in disability services.
All disabilities have common grounds. I've been a part of the lives of many with disabilities. With the hospitalization came suicidal thoughts as an ongoing struggle. Then in 1997, I was able to use a drug that provided relief. After two years, I was free of hospitals. That was 12 years ago. I no longer have any highs and lows, which were prevalent in my condition.
With support of family, church, mental health community and my job options of Linn County, my recovery is real.
