Memories of flood of 2008
The Gazette Opinion Staff

As a flood victim, here are my thoughts on the flood of 2008 and the passing of the fifth anniversary:
The disbelief: It will never happen. It's just another flood, we've had them before. How much water? Walking into what's left of your home.
The smell: Unforgettable, permeating. The one thing that brings all the memories flooding back. Still there on humid days or when they tear down another flooded building.
The loss: Of “stuff” - valuable, memorable, cherished, “yours.” The piles lining the curbs. Neighborhoods, lifetime relationships, lifetime homes, the feeling of security.
The help: Family, friends, co-workers, church family, strangers, Salvation Army, Red Cross, food, hugs, shoulders to cry on.
The final chapter: Demolition. Closure for some, rebuilding for others.
The blessings: New beginnings, new homes, old homes made better, new neighborhoods, new appreciation for what you have.
It will never be the same. It will never be forgotten. But we will go on.
