I am very proud and excited about our current field of Democratic candidates. We have some of the greatest candidates for governor I have ever seen. But, I want to tell you why I am supporting Dr. Andy McGuire. I think it is time to elect more women to office, and I know Iowa currently has a female governor. We just have the wrong one.
As many of you know, I served as a U.S. Representative in Congress for 16 years.
Before serving in Congress, I was in our state senate for 12 years - including four years as Senate President. I've seen what it takes to speak out for hardworking Iowans without fear or favor. I see that dedication in Andy McGuire and that's what inspires me today to support her run for governor.
I served in the Army for 20 years and know firsthand the profound responsibility we have to care for the men and women who stepped forward to protect our nation. Andy does too.
Andy worked at the Veteran's Hospital in Des Moines. There, she saw the sacrifices the men and women serving our country had endured. I know her experience strengthened her dedication to taking care of every service member.
I'm confident in Andy's commitment to helping and serving to the best of her ability. As governor, she will do everything in her power to ensure our veterans always have the support and care they need - and deserve.
