As a rising junior at the University of Iowa, I'm concerned about the future of Iowa, its direction and the plans to address our state's mental health and substance abuse crisis. For far too long, our state government and its leadership have ignored those suffering from mental illness, which is why Iowa is now 50th in the country when it comes to mental health beds. This is a problem that we can no longer ignore, and we must elect leaders who will not only pass legislation but secure the funding we need and promote long-term solutions.
I'm voting for Dr. Andy McGuire in the June 5 primary because she's developed a detailed, comprehensive mental health plan and has pledged to make mental health a cornerstone of her administration. As a physician, Dr. McGuire has worked with patients throughout her career, and she knows that we should treat mental illness and substance abuse like diseases. Dr. McGuire also talks about removing the stigma so people who suffer don't need to be ashamed or hide their illnesses. I've paid attention to all of the candidates in Iowa's race for governor, and I think Dr. McGuire has led on this issue from day one.
With a background in voluntary Medicaid programs, Dr. McGuire is also best suited to fix the Medicaid mess and turn the program back over to the state, so patients can start getting the care that they need again. I hope you will join me in voting for Dr. Andy McGuire on June 5.
