Mayor wrong about taxpayers’ obligations
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Aug. 10, 2011 2:26 pm
In Rick Smith's July 28 article about the cost of the City Hall project, Mayor Ron Corbett is quoted as saying “Local taxpayers won't pay diddly squat for those two projects.” Mayor, you are incorrect, local taxpayers are paying for it.
The fact these projects are funded by state and federal flood-recovery funds does not mean they are “free” to us. Every Cedar Rapids resident who pays state and federal income taxes is paying for a portion of these grants. Local taxpayers may not be paying the total cost but we all pay for these projects, along with every other state and federal project, through the taxes we pay.
