Marriage amendment is attack by religion

In Iowa, the law regarding same-sex marriage states that not allowing members of the same sex to marry is unconstitutional. A proposed amendment to the state constitution would not only prohibit same-sex marriages but would also deny state recognition to arrangements such as civil unions and domestic partnership.
That amendment is wrong. This country is founded on freedoms. The United States allows the freedom of speech and, most importantly, freedom of religion. This clause also covers freedom from religion, yet many people against same-sex marriage use their religion as the backbone of their arguments. They say that allowing same-sex marriage would open up the gateway to polygamy, incest and bestiality. No one can look ahead, but people can look back into history when there were laws that banned the marriage between different races.
Another argument against same-sex marriage states that allowing same-sex marriage causes people in the relationships certain psychological problems. This could be true for today's times because the stress put on the couples in same-sex relationships is dreadful.
They are prosecuted for deviating from the “norm” and embracing it. They are told that they are human beings and can achieve life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as promised in the U.S. Constitution, but only if they change the very essence of who they are.
If legislators pass the proposed amendment, it would symbolize that they don't care about the liberties that every citizen in this country should be entitled to.
