Marion library serves its whole community

I'm glad to see the discussion taking place about the Pride event planned at the Marion Public Library. It's a good opportunity to emphasize the role of public libraries in America - unique in the world - to serve in an inclusive manner the whole community they are a part of. And, of course, when there are citizens who don't agree with an event being held there they have every right to say so, and to schedule an event explaining their point of view.

All of this works best when everyone is respectful of the other's rights and liberties. Let's hope this discussion takes place as a dialogue, not another divisive shouting match. But either way, the library's role is to provide a neutral forum for these conversations to take place. Library director Hollie Trenary is exactly right and doing her job with fairness and professionalism. So while on the subject of pride, the citizens of Marion should be justly proud of their library.
