Make everyone take 10 percent pay cut
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Dec. 4, 2009 11:19 pm
To everyone who thinks that state employees should take a
10 percent cut in pay: More power to you as long as everyone who receives a paycheck in the state also sends 10 percent of his or her gross income to state coffers and doesn't deduct it on their federal tax returns.
For what else is the 10 percent cut to state employees but expected income that the state is withholding to help pay for state services? Why should a small number of people be taxed at that ridiculously high tax rate to provide those services? Apply it to everyone.
Yes, I'm a state employee, but we all also have families, mortgages and lives to live. It's really easy to say “cut 10 percent,” but let everyone who will benefit (all taxpayers in the state of Iowa) join in the pain.
