Make an impact beyond Monday

To the editor:
At Monday's caucus, Iowans not only have the unique opportunity to have the first vote to select our presidential candidates, but we also have the often-overlooked opportunity to influence our state government. By not participating, we run the risk of letting a savvy, vocal minority set the political agenda for all Iowans.
By submitting planks on caucus night that promote a secular approach to a variety of issues, everyday Iowans will get the chance to encourage their elected officials to steer away from religiously based legislation and embrace an evidence-based approach to solving problems.
Demanding a secular government in Des Moines is a nonpartisan issue. The best way to ensure our laws respect the rights of Iowans of all faiths and of no faith is to keep religion and government separate.
The Secular Coalition for Iowa has ready-made planks available that you can print and take with you to the caucus. Contact iowa@secular.org with the subject line 'Secular Plank” to get copies of the planks and to learn more about how you can make an impact beyond the ballot on Monday.
