David Maier and I moved to Cedar Rapids around the same time. In 2017, after decades away, I wasn’t thrilled to return to where I grew up to care for my parents. In 2018, David enthusiastically chose to move to Cedar Rapids because he loves it here.
I was acquainted with David before then — he’s the brother-in-law of a good friend — and I was sure I could help welcome him to Cedar Rapids: showing him around, introducing him to people and getting him involved. That’s not what happened. Instead, David ended up showing me a different Cedar Rapids than the one I left. He immediately immersed himself in the community — volunteering, investing in local business, beautifying his neighborhood, contributing generously to local nonprofit organizations and taking advantage of (and promoting) the many things our city offers.
I saw him everywhere: cycling up Mt. Trashmore, patronizing local coffee shops and restaurants, visiting the library, riding the city bus, helping neighbors and strangers recover from the derecho, planting trees at Brucemore and enjoying theater, live music and community events and celebrations. He has made friends and helped people across every ZIP code in the metro area.
How fortunate we are David now seeks to serve at-large on the City Council. My husband and I are thrilled to support this champion of Cedar Rapids, who will bring his CPA brain and engaging spirit to local government. Please join us in voting for David Maier.
