Low-head dams could provide source of energy revenue

The Gazette's Jan. 19 editorial “Restoring the Lake Delhi dam” illustrates the importance of low-head dams in Iowa.
Many low-head dams in Iowa, if refurbished and generate hydroelectric energy, could provide rural areas a source of energy revenue. This energy revenue could be used to maintain the dam facility which provides: flood control, recreation and fishing, beautify the area, jobs, enhanced property values, and additional local business revenues. In some cases, a source of energy for attracting a small business into the area might be a possibility.
It was recognized in September 2006, upgrade of the Lake Delhi dam for hydroelectric generation would have generated substantial revenue provided a municipality was formed.
Not only is hydroelectric energy “green energy,” it generates “green revenues” that benefit all in the community. Too often, groups with good intentions are impediments to community progress by using clever “environmental” agendas which usually benefit only a few. Some fools call themselves environmentalists while others are environmentalists but “no” fools.
The overall welfare of the community should take precedence over the agenda of a few well-intentioned but misguided individuals opposed to any progress.
