Letters: Tax cuts lead to cuts in services

In the Iowa Statehouse, we are seeing the recurring Republican 'tax cut/cut services” cycle. They are cutting spending for higher education, our courts and human services, justified by a shortage of revenue. Then, when the dust has settled from the cuts, statewide taxes or taxes for some special interests will be reduced under the never-verified assumption that the cuts will spur job growth.
Later, when revenues decline due to the tax cuts, cuts to education etc. will be justified by smaller-than-expected revenues. The cycle goes on and on. When tax cuts sound appealing, remember that they will be followed by reduced public services, underfunded K-12 education and higher tuition at our community colleges and universities. For a look at the long-term effect of this 'cut taxes/cut services” cycle, study the devastation it has brought about in Kansas. Since their tax cuts in 2012 they have been moving from budget crisis to budget crisis.
