Letter: Work will destroy trees, neighborhood

The powers that be have decided to put in a sidewalk on 34th Street SE and Cottage Grove Avenue SE. In doing so they will have to remove many beautiful trees that take a life time to grow and will make the present properties look baron. Why are they doing this? Because they can. It would be money foolishly spent and would ruin the aesthetics of the properties involved.
There are maybe two joggers a day on this street and they seem to prefer running in the street even where there are sidewalks present which are sporadic. Politicians all seem to be the same. With all this money, it doesn't seem to belong to anyone so they have to find a place to spend it. In my opinion, a better place to spend our money would be street surface improvement throughout the city.
I've lived on 34th Street for 38 years and we do not have a traffic problem or a pedestrian problem; we're a neighborhood.
