Letter: Word choice was insensitive

Thank you for the story about our beloved retiring Marion Police Chief Harry Daugherty ('After 40 years with department, Marion police chief steps down,” June 18).
However, referring to the individual who will succeed him as his ‘replacement' is quite insensitive if not downright tacky. You don't ‘replace' people; you ‘replace' the batteries in your flashlight or a burned out light bulb.
The term ‘successor' would have been much more respectful to the legacy of our departed chief.
Case in point: no one ever referred to President Lyndon B. Johnson as President John F. Kennedy's ‘replacement'.
