Letter: Water monitoring should be a priority

We knew this would happen. State funding for the 20-year-old IOWATER volunteer monitoring program has been ended by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Funding levels had been cut repeatedly, but ending the program means that new data acquired by volunteers probably won't be used when the state decides which rivers and streams are impaired, and which swimmable/fishable uses should be protected. Also, long-standing state water-quality rules required by the federal Clean Water Act are being significantly relaxed under the guise of 'regulatory relief.”
Dirty tricks lead to more dirty water. Some things never change.
