Letter: Volunteers proof we live in caring community

When I read in The Gazette that help was needed at the Cherry Building to move Cedar Rapids Public Library's books from the basement to higher ground, I thought that I might be of some help. But when I got down there it was all done, so I looked for other places that might need assistance. Most sent me 'to the next room.”

When I walked through the door of a beautiful fabric/antique store I found that they had to move the entire contents of the store out of the building. I offered to help. Little did I know that I was heading into one of the most exciting mornings of my life. I was surrounded by a wonderful group of people who were eager to help. What a thrill it was to be among that selfless group. And it was fun. We laughed and grunted as we lifted heavy stuff.

The building was full of volunteers and people of all ages who came in to see if they could help, too. I can only imagine how many volunteers there were in the city. I found out that students had been bused in from surrounding communities, including my granddaughter who is an 8th grader in Mount Vernon.

What a wonderful community we live in. Not just a wonderful city, but a big caring community. I felt happy to be a part of it. I wouldn't want more floods, but it demonstrates what a wonderful place we live in.
