Letter: Vernon has knowledge, skill to do the job

A couple of years ago, I got a phone call from Monica Vernon whom I had never met in my life. She had read a mildly satirical letter I had written about flood control in which I had mentioned her. She was concerned that I did not understand the issues involved. For over 30 minutes, in a kind and patient manner, she took time to walk an ordinary 'shelp” who was neither a big contributor or a person of influence through the intricacies and complexities of dealing with various state and federal agencies to rebuild and to prevent future flooding.
She told me she had called me on her cellphone, and encouraged me to call her if there was ever something I did not understand about city government.
From this I learned Vernon had heart in the truest sense - a passion for the people in this community and a deep-seated desire to improve things. But she also has the kind of knowledge and experience it takes to govern and lead. I prefer a mayor who has heart plus the knowledge and skill to do the job.
