The city council's considered “wheel tax” on non-residents of Cedar Rapids is a brilliant idea. It's a bit late in coming, though.
The council should have levied that tax back in 2008, just after the floods. That's when volunteers and disaster recovery businesses came from out of town, out of county and out of state to help the city and its people recover from the devastating flood.
Think of the revenue you missed out on!
Go ahead, Cedar Rapids. Accept the “wheel tax” scheme that you would levy on “outsiders.” If you do, I can assure you I won't spend another dime of the untaxed remainder of my earnings in your “fair” city. I will not buy gas, groceries, fast food or any other restaurant fare, building supplies or equipment, a vehicle, or major appliances.
I won't shop in your malls (or department/discount stores), park in your parking ramps (or feed your meters), visit your museums, use your library, pay through the nose to have some barbecue during the Freedom Fest.
