During the recent high-profile raid on a dog-breeding facility near Wyoming, we learned not everything is as it might be reported in the media. Acting on a “tip,” local law enforcement investigated the kennel and removed some animals. Two weeks later, no charges were filed and all but 17 animals were returned.
Were those 17 dogs rescued? Hardly - they were purchased by local rescue groups upon an agreement with the kennel's owner.
Damage has been done, though. Not only has the owner's reputation been tarnished due to overzealous media coverage resulting from tips that were ultimately unfounded, but the dogs were subjected to the stress and trauma of being removed from their kennel and kept elsewhere.
The majority of breeders are small family business people who do what they do because they love their animals. Jumping to conclusions and assuming the worst just because some feel emboldened by a new law on the books can have unexpected consequences that are in nobody's best interests, including the animals'.
We are hopeful all kennels in Iowa would become licensed and inspected and turn to the Iowa Pet Breeders Association to take advantage of the many educational opportunities we offer to ensure animal welfare is a top priority.
Daniel Reece, President
Iowa Pet Breeders Association
