If you are looking for an activity that is heart healthy and friendly, take a look at square dancing. The American Heart Association supports it as a lifelong activity. It emphasizes fun and fitness, not competition.
Singles, couples and families can join in this activity that supports physical and mental exercise. You might walk three miles a night at a dance, and following the calls will get you listening and thinking. It is an inexpensive family activity (tobacco and alcohol free) that emphasizes fun, friendliness and fitness. All this is to many kinds of music from gospel to rock to polka to Phantom of the Opera.
This time of year is when many clubs are starting to offer introductory dances and beginning lessons. If you are interested in adding something new to your activities, check the Iowa State Square Dance website or email the Cedar Rapids/Marion area club at rapideights@hotmail.com.
