Letter: Some friendly advice for demonstrators

Protesters who stood up to those who believe in the bankrupt ideology of the KKK and Nazis should continue to go and protest, but should not fight back.
I was impressed when I saw young men and women arm-in-arm, standing up to such violent people. However, after those standing were charged, a street battle ensued. That degraded everyone.
It may have felt good to attack those who had attacked you, but it is wrong and counterproductive. I would encourage you to follow the example of Martin Luther King and Gandhi: Accept the beating and brutality; let the police defend you or run away.
I was willing to give my life in Afghanistan for our democracy. If you believe in equality and freedom of speech, do not allow yourself to be blamed for any violence.
I will stand arm-and-arm with you.
