Letter: School funding significantly short

While we are bombarded daily in the media about the damage Republicans are wreaking daily at the federal level, we have to keep focus on what is happening locally.
The proposed funding increase for K-12 schools in Iowa at 1.1 percent is atrocious. Nationwide, school funding has been on decline since the Great Recession began, with many states such as Iowa continuing to underfund this most important institution.
Since Gov. Terry Branstad regained office we have been shorting our schools and this latest proposal is the most shameful.
Fund the schools at 4 percent minimum and remove the reckless tax breaks that are creating huge cuts in higher education as well.
