Letter: Sad to see animals suffer for research

I was very sad to read in the paper about the University of Iowa's euthanization of the wayward goat ('To get William, UI pondered drone, chopper, female goat,” May 27).
Even though they were testing ways to eliminate the pain and find treatments for osteoarthritis, a condition that I have, it saddens me to know the pain the goat had to go through. People will say, ‘oh, it was just an animal,' but you know what, they have feelings too.
I wish there was another way to test medications besides putting animals through pain to find out which one is best for a person's illness. I'm sorry to say, that before another way is found, the poor animals will have to suffer.
